Bio

The youngest of seven children, Josh Clauson was raised in a family with musical roots that date back for generations. Josh’s earliest childhood memories are drenched in music – playing drums on pots and pans as a toddler, performing alongside his siblings at church, and picking up his first guitar at the age of twelve. By the time he turned 16, Josh was singing and writing his own music. He met a couple of like-minded souls in music class and started a funk rock group called My Funktional Family. In addition to being the front man, Josh also served as the band’s promoter, selling mix tapes and booking gigs at local bars long before he and his bandmates were old enough to drink.

After high school, Josh began experimenting with a variety of genres, mixing jam, funk, rock and soul with world beats and African drums. The result was Flowmotion, a Seattle-based group that founded a music festival and performed highly danceable music up and down the West Coast for well over a decade.

During a hiatus from the band, Josh recorded a collection of acoustic tunes that he had written over the years. The resulting self-titled album is an intimate, soft-spoken confessional, showcasing Josh’s raw talent for delivering simple, heartfelt songs. It was also during this transitional time that Josh met Genevieve Hayton, a Skagit Valley native who was working as an immigration attorney in Seattle. Josh and Genevieve were both drawn to a simpler life in the country, and after marrying they moved with Josh’s son back to the farm where Genevieve grew up.

It was out among the open fields that Josh and Genevieve began writing music together. The result is Driftless, a dream-folk album drenched in lush imagery, ambient soundscapes, and compelling lyrics. Recorded at Bell Creek Studio in Welcome, Washington, the songs on Driftless span themes of love, transition, social justice, and enduring hope. Driftless is Josh’s most seminal work to date, highlighting his diverse musical talents on electric and acoustic guitars as well as showcasing a beautiful songwriting collaboration with his wife.

Josh continues to live in rural Washington, where he writes music, produces a music festival, and works on the family farm.

His music is for fans of: Beck, Gregory Alan Isakov, Jose Gonzales, and Nick Drake.
